Is it worth watching?
If you liked the other 3 Die Hards, then yes. Absolutely. Two caveats to that though: if you know anything about hacking, or computers generally, you'll find the whole angle a little silly. And if you don't like your action scenes completely overblown, be warned there's a couple of very, very silly stunts in this movie. John McClane's whole schtick seems to be million-to-one shot badassery. So – do what we did: have a couple of beers and/or some weed (according to your preference) in order to subdue the sceptical, critical-thinking part of your brain, and strap in.
McClane gets a new wise-cracking sidekick in this movie; and although he's young and cute, he pulls off a pretty damn good performance, and – most crucially for young, cute people – isn't annoying, except when he's supposed to be. And whenever he does that, McClane will put him down with an unintellectual, but experienced and world-weary, counterpoint. So no worries there.
Kevin Smith gets a bit-part too! And if you like Kevin Smith, either the man or his movies, you will like his character – and I do like the man, (and his movies even though I concede most of them could do with a bit of heavy-duty polishing) so \his performance was welcome.
The first 30mins is probably the best for me – there's a couple of really great action scenes, including some of that 'par cor' that's so popular these days, and a whole bunch of witty dialogue and intrigue. After that... well to be honest, we were eating chinese food at the time and, what with that and the aforementioned beer, I sort of zoned out to concentrate on decanting and nomming food a few times – I didn't give the full move the attention it deserved. But what I did catch was fun, funny, and tense – IF, as I say, you can bring yourself to take the whole 'hacking' angle even slightly seriously.
The final action scene though. Boy howdy. Set your brain to 'filter out silly' mode, and it's.... good. I think. I did the old “laugh and YEAH!” that you do when something ridiculously cool happens.
This wasn't a very good blog post, sorry. Neither was the last one. Maybe I'll tidy up later.
